Pike Fishing Methods and Tackle

Pike Fishing Methods and Tackle

There are many successful methods used to catch pike, using both natural baits and man made baits. However which ones work best and in which conditions? Not sure whether to use a lure or a live bait? Then let us answer your questions...

Below we have listed the methods and setups we feel are most successful for pike fishing. If you have any other approaches that you think would benefit our readers then please let us know by clicking here.

Spinning and Wobbling

Using spinners or lures is a popular method for catching pike. Depending on the water clarity and conditions, different lures and methods are used. In muddly, cloudy waters, bright vivid colours work best, whereas in clearer waters more natural colours work better.

Once your wire trace is setup and your lure or spinner is attached, cast out next to an area of cover, such as a reed bed. Then slowly reel in using jerky movements of the rod or 'wobble' your bait, to mimic a wounded or hurt fish when swimming. When you feel a tap or pull a pike has most likely taken your bait. Many people leave the pike to take a bait and turn it in it's mouth, then strike shortly afterwards. However this is not recommended as it can injure or kill the fish. Instead strike as soon as you feel the bite.

Dead Baiting

Dead baiting is very similar to spinning and wobbling, apart from the fact that instead of using a spinner or lure you use a dead fish. Ideas for fish to use can be found on our Pike Fishing Baits page. First you must set up a wire trace using two treble hooks placed 3-5 inches apart (depending on the size of your bait). Then hook your bait on the side of its body just below the gills, and just above the tail. Then cast out next to an area of cover and reel in whilst 'wobbling' your bait. If you haven't had a bite re-cast and repeat.

Dead baiting is particularly effective as you are using the exact thing a pike wants to eat, rather than a man made bait. Your bait also emits a smell which pike will pick up on, so this is another factor that makes dead baiting very popular with pike anglers.

Live Baiting

Live bait is one of the easiest baits to use when pike fishing. Simply set up your wire trace the same way as when dead baiting, except using a live fish rather than a dead one. Cast out into an area next to cover and allow your bait to swim around until a pike finds it and eats it. The best idea is to attach a pike float to your line also, this will keep your live bait in the area you put it, whilst at the same time allowing you to see when you have a bite.
