Pike Information

Pike Information

Pike, also known as Esox or the Northern Pike, are a species of predatorial freshwater fish. They can be found all over the world from North America, to Europe, and Asia. They can be identified by their long torpedo shape, pointed heads, and rows of extremely sharp teeth, not to mention their camouflaged grey and green bodies.

Below is a list of different pike information topics, such as pike habitats, pike weights and sizes, pike feeding habits, and pike likes and dislikes.

Pike Habitats

Pike can be found in both rivers and lakes, although there must be an abundance of water life and cover available. As pike are predators their habitat must contain lots of smaller fish for their diet. Cover such as reed beds and tree roots are important so that they can poach passing meals. Pike can live in both fast moving and still waters.

Pike Weight and Size

Pike can grow to an extremely large size depending on their diet and habitat. They can grow to a maximum size of 6 feet (1.8 metres) in length, and a maximum weight of 77 lb (34.9 kg). The average pike tends to grow to around 3 feet (0.9 metres) in length, and around 8 lb (3.6 kg) in weight.

Pike Feeding Habits

The diet of pike mainly consist of small fish (sometimes even their own species), although they will also eat insects, frogs, mice, and even small birds such as ducklings! Pike sit and wait in areas of cover where they will 'poach' their meal. They generally hide in snags such as tree roots and reed beds waiting for unsuspecting fish to swim past. When the time is right they will quickly swim out from their hiding spot and strike, before returning to cover again.

Pike Likes and Dislikes

Like most fish species pike dislike noise and visual disturbances. As pike hide in areas of cover they do not like to be seen or disturbed in any way. When pike fishing try to be as quiet as possible, and try to stay as low as possible to avoid being seen.
